Image
Manchester United are in action again tonight in the first post-Ole Gunnar Solskjaer game, with Michael Carrick leading the side against Villarreal in the Champions League. Victory over Villarreal would put United on their way to Champions League qualification and after a sombre first half, which ended 1-0, United emerged as a different side after the interval. Cristiano Ronaldo gave Carrick’s side the lead with roughly 20 minutes remaining on the clock, capitalising on an error from the Villarreal backline.  The only surprise when Harry Maguire opened the scoring for England in San Marino was that the goal didn’t come until the sixth minute. As expected in this World Cup qualifier, the Three Lions had all of the possession in the opening exchanges.

(Video): Burnley equalise after 80 minutes of Chelsea dominance

(Video) De Gea denies Gabriel Jesus with incredible save in Manchester derby

Image
It has been great to see David de Gea back to his best for Manchester United this season. It seemed like Spain had completely given up on the shot stopper at Euro 2020, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has always backed his goalkeeper to get back to his best. Shame his form has come at a time other players in the team are underperforming on a weekly basis. Today, we are seeing another example of that.

The hosts were indebted to David de Gea for keeping the scoreline so respectable, the Spaniard saving three chances that could’ve seen City out of sight before the break.

Manchester United have fallen behind against arch-rivals Manchester City inside the opening 10-minutes of Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off. Despite naming a strong starting 11, which included five-at-the-back, centre-back Eric Bailly was to blame for a poor error that saw the Citizens take the lead. Since that month-long pre-season in Asia, Greenwood has enjoyed ups and endured downs for the first team.

Further up the pitch, Paul Pogba is welcomed back to the side as Marcus Rashford replaces Edinson Cavani. Atalanta scored the opening goal early in the game as Josip Ilicic’s strike snuck underneath David de Gea, who will be disappointed to have conceded after his good start to the season. Manchester United’s misery was compounded later in the half when Raphael Varane was substituted due to injury, with Solskjaer deciding to go back to a four-at-the-back formation.

Eric Bailly looked like a one-man defence at times and he was caught for Atalanta’s second goal, and not helped by Harry Maguire being all over the place.

Video: Cristiano Ronaldo scores an unbelievable equalizer goal Manchester United 1-1 Atalanta

Image
Manchester United have found themselves trailing to Atalanta once again, after a sloppy defensive showing led to Josip Ilicic netting in the 11th minute of the Champions League tie. A deflection knocked the ball into the path of Duvan Zapata to start the move, with the Colombian forward then skipping down the left side, before tricking Aaron Wan-Bissaka with a tidy heel chop. Zapata looked up and picked out Ilicic with a nice pass, the Atalanta attacker was left in plenty of space by Luke Shaw and the England international was duly punished for not tracking the run. Ilicic drilled a strike towards goal, which appeared to be directed straight at David de Gea, though the ball ended up in the back of the net after a blunder from the United goalkeeper.

(Video): Hakim Ziyech breaks the deadlock for Chelsea against Malmo

Image
Hakim Ziyech has had a difficult run as a Chelsea player, but he’s broken the deadlock here. The Morocco star burst forward and was able to get on the end of a raking Callum Hudson-Odoi cross here in the early stages of the second half. That takes a lot of pressure off us, and should open the game up hugely. We’re happy for Hakim, happy for Callum, happy for everyone. Walk away from this game with a win, and we’re back in a good spot in the group after a shaky start. You can see the goal in the clips embedded here:
